The world’s largest ball of twine is not just a ball of twine, it’s the size of a two-story house. The ball weighs over 100,000 pounds and is housed in a shed in Darwin, Minnesota. The ball was made by Francis A. Johnson who started adding to it back in 1937 where he used to work as an electrician and mechanic at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

The twine came from Johnson’s farm and some people donate their own strands for him to add on so that it can grow bigger each year. This has been going on for more than 60 years now!

The sculpture was built in 1988 by sculptor George Segal, who created other famous works including “Five Car Stud” at Rockefeller Center and “Tableau” on Broadway (the latter featuring seven nude models).
